Agriculture for Secondary Schools

            Activity 10.1
            Perform the following tasks:
            1. Visit your school farm or a nearby dairy farm under the supervision of your
teacher, identify the dairy type of animals and their breeds that are kept at that
                 farm.

            2. Enquire the benefits obtained by owners from particular dairy enterprise(s).
            3. Explain to the class the characteristics of the breed you have found in the farms
as well as the benefits of dairying you have enquired.

            Dairy farming systems

Recall what you have learnt in Form One on the various livestock farming systems
namely intensive, semi-intensive and extensive. Those systems are the ones used in
dairy farming for both dairy cattle and goats.

            (a) Intensive system
This is a system where dairy animals are confined indoor and fed inside the shed for
most of their life time. In this system, feeding and drinking equipment are placed in
the shed where the animal can have access to feeds and water. This is suitable for
all dairy animals. On the basis of feeding, cut and carry (zero grazing system) falls
            under this intensive system.

            (b) Semi intensive
This is a system where the animals are kept partly indoor and partly outdoor for
grazing. The system needs relatively a large area for pasture. In Tanzania, the system
is commonly used by small-scale and medium-scale producers. It is characterised
by having an area in which the animals can forage on natural or developed pastures.
            (c) Extensive system
In this system, dairy animals are allowed to go out for grazing on pasture. It is
practised where grazing land is available.

            Activity 10.2
            Perform the following tasks:
            1. Using the nearby farm or your school farm, study the farm, check the area
available, observe the farming system used and with reasons, suggest whether
the system is suitable in that area.
            2. Present your suggestions in class.
