After cleaning, make sure the calf is provided with adequate colostrum (the first
milk). Care should also be taken to the dam by cleaning the hind quarter including
the outer genitalia with warm water and disinfectants. Thereafter, provide the dam
with fresh feeds and plenty of water.
Activity 10.3
In your school farm or any other farm, what are the major husbandry practices done
after mating and after parturition of the cow. In group, discuss their adequacy or
deficiencies and their subsequent effects to the animal and to the farm.

Answer the following questions:
1. Define the following terms as applied in dairy farming:
(a) Flushing
(b) Steaming up
(c) Drying off
2. What are the major husbandry practices that should be done immediately after
parturition? In your answer, consider both the mother, new born and the farmer.
3. Describe the signs of heat in a cow.
4. Explain the importance of drying off a dairy cow.
