Agriculture for Secondary Schools

            Activity 10.6
            Perform the following tasks:
            1. Use a nearby dairy farm or school farm and practice hand milking by following
the hand milking procedures. Alternatively, use a rubber udder to carry out this
                 task.
            2. Also visit a nearby dairy farm which is using machine milking; observe the
procedures as well as major features and their functioning.
            3. Report your observations in class for discussion.

            Milk marketing
Milk is a very perishable product and it must be sold within a short period of time
after milking. Despite the perception that the demand for milk is high, the community
surrounding and the quality of milk you produce will determine the amount you can
sell at a time and how far you are to transfer your milk. In some cases, you will need
to practise some form of preservation before the milk is sold. It is advised to have
some strategies for preservation and selling of milk. Methods of milk preservation
are covered in Chapter Eight of this book. Three further strategies are proposed
            below:
            (a) To organise a marketing group which will enable you to know where the
demand for milk is. Information for demand from one farmer is circulated
                 within members of the group.
            (b) To set milk collection points which will collect milk from farmers in certain
areas in bulk for milk vendors or processors. This strategy ensures that milk
is available at a point accessible by the buyers. A good example in Tanzania
is Tanga, Iringa, Kilimanjaro, Mara, Morogoro Njombe and Mbeya Regions.
Dairy cattle farmers decided to form groups and milk collection centres where
milking processing companies buy milk from these centres.
            (c) Starting up a small-scale milk processing plant. You can add value of your
milk by starting a small milk processing plant to process milk into other milk
products like butter, ghee, cheese, yoghurt, and ice creams that have longer
shelf life (refer to the previous chapter on handling and processing of livestock
products on sections of handling and processing of milk).

            Activity 10.7
            Perform the following tasks:
            1. Visit a nearby dairy farm or school farm and observe their milking procedures.
In case of any difference from what you have learnt, request from the responsible
person for reasons of the deviations.

            2. Request from the owner on how and where they sell milk.
            3. Prepare a report and present it in class.
