Milking techniques and procedures
Milking is the process of drawing out or removing milk from the udder of a lactating
animal. Milking can be done either by using milking machines or by hand. Milking
done by machines is called machine milking and that done by hand is called hand
milking. The choice of any of these milking options will depend on the capital you
have to invest and number of animals kept. In both cases, proper milking procedures
are very important to avoid injuries and diseases of the udder such as mastitis.
Procedures for hand milking
These procedures are grouped into preparation of materials and utensils, preparation
of the animal, actual milking and after milking. These procedures are elaborated in
the following sub-sections.
Preparation of the materials and equipment: Before you start milking, you have
to prepare materials and utensils such as feeds, ropes, stool, towel, milking salve,
bucket, strip cup, warm water, strainers, and milk cans. You should have to ensure
that every piece of material or utensil is clean and is in good working order.
Preparation of the animal: You are recommended to prepare the animal before
starting milking as follows:
(a) Bring the cow at the milking area.
(b) Restrain the animal by rope or crush.
