Management of dairy goat
A herd of dairy goat is divided into groups for easy management of the herd especially
on breeding and feeding. The groups may include lactating does (female goat), kids
(young goat), weaners, and bucks (male goat).
Selection of suitable dairy goat to raise for milk production
The selection of suitable goats to raise for milk production are similar to those of
selection for dairy cattle management.
Housing management
The dairy goat house should be well ventilated to allow air circulation. It should be
constructed to meet the requirement of each group to be kept in. The details for dairy
goat housing are in Chapter Four of this book on Livestock housing.
Feeding management
A dairy goat should be well fed so as to produce milk at optimal point. Feed your
goat to ensure that the dry matter intake is in a range of 3.5 - 5% of its live weight.
It is advised to have feeding troughs that will not allow the animals to crowd on the
feed (refer to Figure 10.6) or on water troughs. Apart from feeding forages, dairy
goat should also be fed with concentrates made by combining several feedstuffs
(refer to Chapter Five of this book on Feeding of livestock).
