Physical planning
Important factors you need to consider when planning to keep animals and produce
livestock products successfully include selection of suitable type and breed of
livestock for the enterprise, suitable system of farming, suitable housing, proper
control of diseases and parasites, proper feeding, proper breeding as well as proper
harvesting, handling, processing and marketing of livestock produce/product(s).
The selection of a suitable type and breed of livestock for the enterprise is going
to be elaborated in next sub-sections while detailed information on other factors
to consider in planning for livestock enterprise will be presented in the subsequent
chapters of this book.
Selection of suitable type of livestock for the enterprise
It is very important to select what type of animal you wish to rear. Keep the type of
animals that can do well in your geographical area. The types of livestock selected
must be suitable to the physical and social environment of your area. Examples of
livestock you can keep are dairy cattle, beef cattle, poultry, pigs, sheep, goats and
rabbits (refer to Figures 3.2 to 3.9).
