insulation under the roof. Feeding, watering and egg collection has to preferably
be done from outside the house due to the size of this type of building. Figure 4.19
shows a section of slatted floor poultry housing system.

The slatted floor poultry housing system is advantageous in that birds take less floor
space per bird compared to the solid floor system and there is no need to provide any
form of litter or bedding. It is easy to collect manure as the chicken droppings pass
through the openings on the floor slots. The chicken house is also cleaner with better
sanitation. Moreover, it reduces the rate of spread of diseases and parasites related
to poultry excreta because birds have little contact with their faecal droppings. In
addition, the system allows a lot of ventilation into the house. However, the system
involves a higher initial cost than conventional solid floors. It is not easy to regain
feeds in case the spill gets lost through the slots. The system has also less flexibility
in the use of the building. Furthermore, flies can penetrate the house through the
openings under the floor thereby increasing fly problem.
