Business licence
This licence is usually issued upon registering the business. It is the authorisation given
by the business licensing authorities to start and operate the business. In Tanzania
Mainland, business licences are classified into class A and class B. Class A business
licences are issued by the BRELA. In contrast, those of class B are issued by LGAs.
In Zanzibar, LGAs are responsible for issuing business licences except for specific-

sector businesses such as tourism and construction businesses, for which the respective
authorities issue the licences. Figure 3.5 indicates a sample of a class A business licence
issued by BRELA for the Tanzania Mainland. Also, Figure 3.6 indicates a sample of a
class B business licence issued by LGAs for the Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
