               they   lack, and inform them about the agencies responsible for such licences.
          (c)   Record any challenges they face in accessing such licences.

          Generally, business registration  in  Tanzania  is a multifaceted  phenomenon  as
          demonstrated in Figure 3.1. However, business registration depends on the form of the

          business (size, business organisation, and products), type of sector, locality (Tanzania
          Mainland versus Zanzibar), ownership (local versus foreign), location (rural versus
          urban), and many others. Based on the Tanzania SME Development Policy of 2003,
          capital invested in the business and the number of employees is a criterion used in
          determining the category of registered businesses, including small businesses.

          The following are types of licences and certificates for small businesses registration:
          Business name registration certificate
          This is an opportunity for businesses including small businesses to register a trading
          name with the licensing authority. The individual business name is owned by one natural
          person or legal person. BRELA and BPRA are responsible for registering business
          names in the Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, respectively. Figure 3.2 presents samples
          of the business name registration certificates offered by BRELA and BPRA.
