A terrible accident
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Yesterday afternoon, an accident involving a passengers’ bus and a loaded
semi-trailer occurred at around 12.30 p.m. on the Dodoma-Mwanza highway,
near the Njiapanda Weighbridge.
Mr Chali, an eyewitness to the accident, reported that the overspeeding
passengers’ bus was travelling from Dodoma to Mwanza. While attempting to
overtake a lorry fully loaded with timber at a blind corner, the bus tragically
collided head-on with a semitrailer heading to Dodoma from Mwanza.
Locals from the nearby area rushed to the scene to help with the rescue. By
the time the locals arrived, two people in the semi-trailer had already died.
The lorry had been severely damaged. On the bus, there were 69 passengers:
35 women, 25 men and 9 children. During the rescue, it was found that 30
people had died on the spot, 22 of whom were men. The injured, totalling 39,
were taken to the nearby hospital by the locals and the municipal ambulances.
Later, 21 of the severely injured were referred to the National Hospital for
further treatment.
According to a radio report, police officers have begun investigating the real
cause of the accident. Speaking at the scene yesterday, the Regional Traffic
Officer warned bus drivers against reckless driving. “Stringent legal measures
will be taken against drivers who endanger people’s lives through reckless
driving,” he added.
