Textiles and Garment Construction


           Elastic       a narrow strip and generally serves to increase the ability of
                         garment to stretch, either to accommodate movement or to make
                          the garment suitable for wearers of many different physical sizes.
           Embroidery  many different types of decorative stitches used on a fabric
           Fabric        a cloth made by weaving, knitting, or felting textile fibres such as
                         cotton, silk
           Fasten off        securing the end of thread by stitches during sewing

           Fasten on       securing the beggining of the stitch when sewing
           Fastener      a device for closing the opening on garments. Examples of fasteners
                         are zips, buttons and buttonholes
           Fastening     a device, for example, button or zip used to close a piece of
                         clothing
           Fullness      this is the extra amount of fabric in pattern pieces that need to be
                         arranged to give a garment good fit
           Gathers       tiny, soft folds of fabric formed when a larger piece of a fabric is
                         sewn to a smaller piece. They are used especially on skirts and

                         puffed sleeves
           Hem           a finished edge on a garment; this is a last step in sewing a garment
           Hook          section of a fastener that is held on to the bar, loop, or eye to make
                         a fastener
           Laundering  washing fabric by hand or by machine with a soil removing
                         product
           Line          in garment designs refers patterns arranged to draw the eye vertically,

                          horizontally or diagonally
           Notching      cutting v-shaped sections from the seam allowance
           Openings      gap section created or made on a garment for easy putting on and
                         taking off the garment
           Piping        is a trim or edging formed by sewing a thin strip of folded fabric
                         - typically bias binding  into a narrow tube and attaching it to the
                          edge of a piece of fabric. It can also include cord to give it extra
                         body.
           Pucker        to form or make something form small folds or lines

           Quitting      the act of leaving a place. Sew up and quitting are semantically
                         related, this means straight stitching
           Raw edges     an unfinished, rough, or undecorated edge of a fabric
