Textiles and Garment Construction

           Ribbon             a narrow strip or band of fabric, especially a fine fabric such
                              as satin or velvet, used for finishing edges, trimming or tying
                              things together or as a decoration.
           Right side of fabric good looking surface of the fabric. It is usually the outer part of
                              the garment when worn
           Rivert (buttons)   a metal pin (buttons) used as a fastener

           Rouleau loop       a decorative technique that involves creating patterns with piping,
                              cording or bias tape.
           Ruffles            a strip of closely gathered, flared frills or pleated cloth or fabric
                              used for a decoration or trim.
           Scrap material     a leftover piece of fabric that is too small, on its own, to be used
                              in another project by itself. It always happens when you sew a
                              lot-you end up with tons of leftover pieces of fabric and you need

                              ways to use fabric.
           Seam               joining of fabric pieces together by stitching
           Seam allowance     the width between fabric edge and seam line
           Seam finish        the treatment on seam edges to prevent ravelling, make the seam
                              stronger and durable
           Shank              a device for providing a small amount of space in between a
                                  garment and a button
           Selvedge           the closely woven edges along each side of a length of fabric
           Strip              a long narrow piece of a fabric that can be used for binding

           Striped fabric       any textile woven, knitted, or printed in such a way that bands
                              of different colours, evenly or unevenly spaced, appear on the
                              surface of the fabric
           Tacking            refers to temporarily holding several layers of fabric in place to
                              prevent them from shifting while machine sewing
           Topstitched seam   a plain seam with a row of machine stitching on one or both sides
                              of the seam line.

           Treadle            lever device pressed by the foot to drive a machine.
           Trimmings          materials that are used to decorate something along its edges such
                              as lace, bias binding and frill
           Warps              threads that run lengthwise in a woven fabric
           Wefts              threads that run crosswise in a woven fabric
           Wrong side of fabric faded or faint part of the fabric. It is usually the inside of the
                                garment when worn
