Glossary
Accessory a thing, which can be added to something else in order to make
it more versatile, or attractive. An object that is decorative rather
than useful such as ear ring, tie, watch, belt and brooches
Applique sewing small pieces of fabric to the top of a larger piece of fabric
to add decoration
Basting a temporary joining of fabric layers such as in making collar or
belt
Bias binding a strip of material cut on the bias for extra stretch used for binding
hems, interfacing or for decoration
Bias an edge cut diagonally across the threads of a piece of a fabric
A true bias is at a 45-degree angle to the grain line
Brooche a small piece of jewellery, which has a pin at the back so that it can
be fastened on a dress, blouse, or coat
Casing a folded over edge of fabric or an application that is applied
separately to the garment. The end result is used to enclose a
drawstring tie or elastic
Checked fabric a pattern of stripes consisting of crossed horizontal and vertical
lines forming squares.
Cling to hold on tightly to something or to fit tightly and show the shape
of the body
Clipping making small short cuts on the edge of a fabric, especially on the
curved edges to lie smoothly
Coarseness roughness or unrefined or unpolished surface. Coarse fabric have a
rough texture because they consist of thick threads.
Concealed hidden
Conspicuous easy to be seen or noticed
Crossway strip a strip of a fabric cut diagonally from a square pieces of a fabric,
also known as biasstrip
Dart a stitched fold that provides shape and fullness to a garment so that
it fits the curves of the body
Designer a person who is creative enough to have new ideas and practical
knowledge on how to turn those ideas into a product
Easing controlling fullness by drawing or pulling invisible garment to fit
well and has ability to stretch
