The bound opening: This is used as an
alternative of the faced slit opening but
it is only suitable for thin materials. It
is also a good choice for transparent
fabrics. The method of making this type
of opening is the same as that of making
a faced slit opening except on neatening,
where a bound opening requires a narrow
crossway binding instead of a facing.
If the opening is at the neck, the
           binding continues around the neck
edge. The opening can be made
decorative using a fabric of contrasting
colours or a binding, which is cut
from a checked or a striped fabric.

           Procedure for cutting crossway strips

            (i) The fabric should be folded over
one corner in such a way that the
weft edge lies along the selvedge.

                     Weft

(iv) Join the strips to get the required

Weft length if necessary. Layout the stripe
side by side right side upper most.

(ii) Mark line of fold with pins and open Selvedge Selvedge
                 out the flap.

(iii) Using a ruler or guide, mark with (v) Cut the ends parallel to the selvedge
pins or chalk lines parallel to the edges.
fold line, the distance between them
being the required width of the 90
strips. Cut along the marked lines. Cut Cut
