Handling and processing of livestock products and by-products
Usually, when an individual engages in livestock production, the ultimate aim is
to sell the animals and/or their products and by-products. Animal products are the
primary produce of the enterprise. They include live animals, meat, milk, and eggs.
On the other hand, livestock by-products are the secondary produce of the enterprise.
Animal by-products include hides/skin, horns, hooves, blood, offals, and manure.
All livestock dealers, including those collecting animals from remote areas bringing
them to the markets and processers of animal products, must abide by standards
that govern animal transportation and handling practices to ensure their quality.
Handling of live animals
Before transporting animals for slaughter or rearing, the following actions
should be undertaken:
(a) Securing movement permits for the animals: When moving animals from
one location to another, one must obtain a special certificate/permit from
the responsible authorities. This is a compulsory regulation for all types
of animals. This allows responsible authorities to inspect the animals’
