Use any learning resources, including library/internet search, video clips,
experienced livestock keepers and experts to:
1. List any five plant protein feedstuffs used as ingredients in a mixture ration
2. Outline any three common established pastures for livestock
3. Describe how the following factors can cause illness to farm animals.
(a) Poor feeding;
(b) Poor hygiene;
(c) Microorganism; and
(d) Poor handling of animals.
4. Suggest how animal illness caused by the above factors in 1 (a-d) can be
managed.
5. Discuss how animal housing can influence livestock production.
Breeding and reproduction management in livestock
Breeding and reproduction are essential phenomena for the existence and
continuity of all living things. The breeding process to produce high-performing
animals is a complex science performed by animal breeders. In this chapter, the
roles of the livestock farmer are:
(a) Selecting animals based on performance records of their dam, sire, and
offspring;
(b) Mating animals of the desired characters while ensuring they are not
related;
(c) Raising off-springs using the best management practices; and
(d) Making replacement of animals from reliable, healthy stock of high
performance.
