Instructions:
Step 1: Explore hop-to-hop delivery
(a) Research how the data link layer
enables hop-to-hop delivery of
frames that encapsulate your request
for website viewing. Trace the path
from your computer (first hop) to
the layer 2 or 3 switch (second hop)
and finally to the router (third hop),
ready to exit your school’s network
infrastructure.
(b) Use network simulation software
to create a simple network
topology. Simulate sending a
request from your computer to a
web server. Observe how the data
is encapsulated into frames and
travels through each hop.
Step 2: Analyse incoming packages
(a) Investigate how incoming packages
(web page responses) arrive at the
router, pass through the switch, and
eventually reach your computer for
website viewing.
(b) Use network simulation software
to simulate the return path of the
web page response. Observe the de-
encapsulation process at each hop.
Step 3: Examine Data Link layer
protocols
(a) Study how protocols at the data
link layer cooperate to facilitate

computer from your local area
network.
(b) Use tools like Wireshark to capture Chapter Three: Advanced Computer Networks
and analyse real network traffic.
Identify data link layer protocols
such as Ethernet and examine the
frames for source and destination
MAC addresses, and other protocol-
specific details.
Step 4: Document your findings
Write down your findings and
document them in a portfolio. Include
screenshots from the simulations and
analysis from Wireshark to support
your observations.
Deliverables:
(a) A detailed report documenting your
exploration of the data link layer’s
role in hop-to-hop delivery, the
path of web page responses from
the router to your computer, and
the cooperation of data link layer
protocols in facilitating content
delivery.
(b) Screenshots and descriptions of
the network simulations and traffic
analysis using Wireshark.
