Chapter
Eleven Appreciating the aesthetics and values of
literature
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Introduction
In literature, aesthetics and values are considered two sides of the same coin.
On the one side, aesthetics refers to the principles and qualities that describe
the beauty, emotional resonance and artistic merit of a literary work. It involves
such elements as language, style, form and symbolism. On the other side, values
refer to the underlying beliefs, ideals, and moral principles that shape the themes,
characters and messages within a piece of literature. In this chapter, you will learn
to appreciate the aesthetics and values of literature by assessing the contribution
of elements of form in shaping the meanings and messages of a literary work,
relating the lesson from literary work to real-life situations, and assessing the
contribution of Tanzanian and other literature in moulding a civilised society. The
competencies developed will enable you to enrich your literary analysis, grasp the
complexities of human experience and expression, and foster empathy, insight and
intellectual growth.
Think about
1. the ways to cultivate a deeper appreciation of the aesthetics of literature
beyond surface-level analysis.
2. the strategies you can employ to recognise diverse literary styles and
forms.
3. the way an understanding of cultural and historical contexts of literature
enhance your appreciation of its aesthetic and moral dimensions?
4. how to discern the underlying values and messages embedded in literary
works.
