          (b) Read the following story and write what theme or meaning is suggested by the
              setting of this story.

                                                Text 1
The sun dipped low on the horizon, spreading a cosy golden light over the rolling
hills. Tall grass moved softly in the wind, murmuring hidden truths to the ancient trees

guarding the forest’s boundary. A narrow dirt trail twisted through the field, vanishing
into the darkness of the forests. Birds joyfully sang above, and the air was saturated
with the pleasant aroma of wildflowers. In the distance, one could faintly hear the
gentle melody of a river, enhancing the peacefulness of the surrounding. This was a
place unaffected by time, where nature was in charge and the concerns of the world
          appeared to disappear.

You may have varied responses in Activity 11.2 (b) regarding what theme or meaning
is suggested by the setting of the story. However, it can be said that the setting plays
a significant role in shaping the meaning of the story in several ways: first, “the sun
dipped low”, “tall grass” and “a narrow dirt trail” phrases create a sense of scary
and isolated forest. The physical isolation of the character in the forest reinforces
the theme of isolation and adds depth to the character’s struggle, the struggle against
nature. Secondly, the setting provides a symbolic representation of interpretation, the
symbolism of the landscape. The hills, tall grass, and ancient trees in the forest with
a river flowing serve as powerful symbols such as barriers that the character must
          overcome.

          (c) Read the provided literary works and assess the contribution of each of the
following elements in shaping the meaning of the work.

          (a) Read the following dialogue.

          Abdi: Hey, James! What’s up?

James: Just the usual, Abdi. How are you? I see you’re buried in the book again.
Abdi: Oh, yeah. I’m just finishing up “His Excellence the Head of State” by
Danny Safo. It’s such a powerful book.
