Activity 11.4 Assessing the contribution of Tanzanian literature in moulding
a civilised society
(a) Conduct a two-week project using the following guidelines.
1. Title of the project: “Assessing the contribution of Tanzanian literature in
moulding a civilised society”
2. The overall report format will be provided by your teacher.
3. Your report should contain a clear analysis of various dimensions of
literature’s impact on the Tanzanian society. You may use the following
structured approach to frame the content of your report.
Historical context: Begin by exploring the historical background of Tanzanian
literature in general. Trace its evolution from oral traditions to written forms
highlighting key periods, moments and influential figures. Trace the development of
Tanzanian literature in English by pointing out economic, political and ideological
forces behind its development as well as its influential figures such as Peter Palangyo,
Gabriel Ruhumbika, Abdulrazak Gurnah, Elieshi Lema and Richard Mabala.
Literary themes and motifs: Identify overarching themes and motifs in Tanzanian
literature in English. Study how these themes align with societal values, norms
and challenges. Look for recurring themes such as identity, tradition vs. modernity,
colonialism, social justice and power struggle.
Representation and diversity: Critically evaluate various voices and perspectives
represented within Tanzanian literature in English. Examine the way various ethnic,
cultural and social classes are portrayed and whether the narratives consider inclusivity.
Social commentary: Explore the role of Tanzanian literature in English in critiquing
societal issues, such as FGM and child abuse, and advocating for change. Analyse how
authors deal with issues like gender inequality, political oppression, corruption and
poverty. Analyse the effectiveness of their commentary in enhancing social awareness
and transformation.
