tranquility and where our feelings can spontaneously overflow from a
store of things we experience, desire, wish and imagine.
Alex: Yeah, and there’s always this element of pleasure uniting with truth and
calling imagination to the help of reason. The combination keeps you
hooked. I remember the exact words my English subject teacher used
when introducing this genre in Form Three. She said it’s like the human

soul being squeezed just like a lemon, drop by drop, into atomic words.
Semeni: That speaks volumes, buddy. Speaking of poetic words, they are
incredible. They are rhythmically presented in lines and stanzas, and
that is called traditional. Others deviate from regular rhythm and are
called modern but both are united by a common feature, to be sung or
recited to elicit an emotional response.
Sam: Definitely. But there is also drama. It’s a whole different ball game. It’s
all about performance. Either as a play, opera, mime, ballet, etc.
Alex: Yeah, I love going to theatres or listening and watching such performances
one on the radio or television. I don’t mind even if am to read it. I just
love the magic that comes with it. Whether it’s the hero’s downfall in
tragedy, amusing or entertaining and usually a happy ending in comedy,
absurd and surprising events in tragi-comedy or …eemh…
Semeni: I guess you meant to talk about the captivating contrast between good
and evil, pursuits, eruptions, combats, encounters, unsystematic plots,
attractive marvels, musical background, comical breaks, quick and
exaggerated actions, and complete and beautiful activities in melodrama.
Right?
Alex: Absolutely right Semeni. The list can go on a little bit longer. All in all
a playwright throws you for a loop.
Sam: True that. What about fiction guys? What a name for this genre. You
know in Latin fiction means “fashioning or forming.” it is predominantly
prose in form and novel, novella, and short story formats, and both
formats exercise one’s brain as one tries to piece together clues alongside
characters and events.
Semeni: Absolutely. Fiction too is a product of the author’s actual or invented
(imaginary) experiences replete with symbolism, thematic layers, and
aesthetic significance.
Sam: Don’t forget that with scientific and technological advancements the
offshoots of fiction, fantasy and science fiction involve elements of the
supernatural, futuristic technology, and imaginary worlds.
