            (i) Poetry

Poetry is a literary genre in which ideas and feelings are expressed with intensity
using figurative language and sounds. Poetic language evokes a concentrated
imaginative awareness of experience or specific emotional response. Poetry uses
the same techniques as other genres, but it has some peculiar features: Poetry is

written in lines/verses and stanzas; it is written to be sung or recited; sometimes,
            it has rhymes and rhythm.

Poetry is characterised by its economic language, use of imagery, rhythm, and often,
rhyme. It typically conveys emotions, ideas and experiences in a concentrated and
artistic manner. Poetic forms such as sonnets, haikus and free verse offer varied
structures and constraints, allowing poets to explore themes through different
            stylistic approaches.

            (ii) Play (Stage play, Drama)
A stage play is a literary composition for a dramatic performance. It consists of
dialogue and interactions between characters. It may also include a monologue.
Like other literary works, the main functions of a play include entertaining and
educating society. It is distinguished from other literary works by the following
elements: It is written to be performed on stage; it depends on dialogue and it is
            divided into acts and scenes.

A play is intended for performance, encompassing plays, scripts and theatrical
works. Dramatic texts feature dialogue and stage directions and often explore
conflict, character interactions, and thematic elements through interactions of
characters within a specific setting. Dramatic works are typically divided into acts
and scenes, with an emphasis on dialogue and theatrical staging.

(iii) Prose fiction (novels and short stories)
Prose fiction encompasses various forms of written language that lack the metrical
structure and heightened language of poetry. This genre includes novels, novella
and short stories. The prose is characterised by its narrative and expository style,
offering detailed descriptions, character development and plot progression.
