ideas effectively, persuade others, inspire action, or share information on various
topics.
A speech is a formal address or discourse delivered to an audience. One can deliver
speeches in formal settings such as conferences, ceremonies, or political rallies,
as well as in more informal contexts like conversations or presentations. Whether
aiming to motivate, educate, entertain, or rally support, speeches are a powerful
tool for conveying messages and connecting with audiences on a personal and
emotional level.
Learning how to prepare and deliver speeches is essential for enhancing your
linguistic proficiency and fostering your communication skills and confidence.
Speech preparation requires a profound understanding of vocabulary, grammar, and
syntax, compelling you to refine your language abilities. Additionally, delivering
speeches requires effective articulation, pronunciation, and intonation, enabling
you to practise and improve your English-speaking proficiency. Moreover, public
speaking promotes critical skills such as organisation, persuasion, and audience
engagement, which are vital for both personal and professional contexts. Ultimately,
mastering the art of speech delivery allows you to convey your ideas effectively,
connect with others, and succeed in diverse social settings.
(b) Read the stages for preparing a speech in the following text.
Identify a topic: Preparing a speech is a planned activity. Every speaker has a topic
and a purpose for making a speech. Thus, you must identify the subject matter you
want to talk about. You must also ensure that you have adequate knowledge of the
subject matter and personal interest in the topic you plan to present. A good speech
often focuses on one main topic; it may also deal with sub-topics related to the main
topic or even multiple topics, depending on the context. For example, you may choose
to talk about Challenges of industrialisation in Tanzania, The Effect of Global Warming
on the World, or The Effectiveness of the Free Education Policy in Tanzania, depending
on your interest and expertise. As you can see, each of these topics focuses on a specific
issue, depending on the context. Therefore, you should concentrate on one topic and
explore it in depth.
In addition, choose a topic that is neither too broad nor too narrow. If your topic is too
broad, it will be difficult for you to cover the subject matter adequately. Similarly, if
your topic is too narrow, it will be difficult for you to make effective arguments.
