using appropriate language, time management, and maintaining eye contact with the
audience, voice, posture, gesture and self-confidence. You should consider the following
guidelines when preparing to deliver a speech and during delivering the speech.
Dress code: Improper attire can distract the audience from concentrating on your speech.
People have a general tendency to judge our personality based on our dress styles.
In this case, no matter how competent and inspirational you may be, you will never
impress people if your dress is improper. However, it is worth understanding that an
appropriate dress code is geographically and culturally determined. For example, what
might appear a proper dress code in China or Europe may not be proper in Tanzania.
Use of appropriate language: The choice of vocabulary plays a significant role in
enabling the audience to understand your speech. Appropriate and relevant vocabulary
also reveals your personality, respect, and maturity. An appropriate choice of vocabulary
creates moods and images for a powerful and vivid speech. Thus, when delivering
a speech and responding to questions, make sure that your language presents you
positively to the audience and motivates them to listen attentively and comprehend
your speech. Normally, a speech is delivered to inform the audience or persuade them
to take action. As such, you ought to use language that the audience understands. You
need to use appropriate grammar, vocabulary, genre, and level of formality in delivering
a speech.
Time management: A well-planned speech is time-conscious. Plan your speech to fit
into the scheduled timeframe so that you do not bore your audience with it. Avoid
spending too much time on one issue and rushing over others when they all have equal
importance. The audience can notice such a lopsided presentation. Punctuality is a
requirement in delivering your speech. If the audience has to wait for a long time, they
may lose interest.
Eye contact: Establish eye contact with the audience. Avoid spending most of your
time reading the speech with your eyes fixed on paper. Keeping eye contact will create
a bond between you and the audience, which is beneficial to both sides. On your side,
eye contact will communicate confidence and belief in your viewpoint. On the side of
your audience, it will create trust and engagement in your speech.
Voice: Use a clear, audible, and appropriate voice to ensure clarity of the sounds and
words you produce. While maintaining a clear voice for your audience to hear you,
you should also take note of the following voice components: voice rate, volume,
pitch, pronunciation and fluency. These components depend on emphasis and meaning.
Variation in these components helps you to engage and interest the audience in addition
to ensuring that you communicate your ideas clearly.
