(iii) Conclusion
In this section, you should summarise what you have discussed in your speech by
paraphrasing the key themes and arguments. Considering the nature and context of
your speech, this is often followed by a call to action as a way of involving the audience
in implementing what you have proposed in your speech. For example:
We have the problem with us; we have the causes with us; we all know where we went

wrong; we also know who did something and who did nothing; fortunately, we now have
a common stand on addressing truancy. A collaborative approach involving parents,
students and the school management will address the problem and ensure all our children
get the education they need. Finish your speech with words of appreciation, such as
“Thank you for listening.” or “Thank you for your kind attention.”…, Chairperson ….,

DID YOU ?
KNOW
Although a speech is primarily written, it is intended to be presented orally.
As such, preparing a good speech requires identifying a topic to be presented,
determining the purpose of the speech, thinking about the context and audience,
deciding on the title of your speech, collecting information, and writing an outline.
After doing all these, rehearsing and familiarising yourself with the venue and
equipment are essential, as follows:
Rehearse: Irrespective of how long you have spent planning your speech, you
must practise it aloud. If possible, make a presentation before a small audience,
such as friends and family members. Ask them for feedback and use it for
improvement. Practise using proper gestures and appropriate movements as you
address the audience. Speak clearly, confidently and passionately to sustain the
interest of your listeners. Do not worry about mistakes; even the most experienced
speakers occasionally make mistakes. Being overly sensitive about yourself will
make your presentation forced. Your comfort and confidence level throughout the
presentation will increase with practice. Practice also makes it easier for you to
comprehend the subject matter and to rephrase your speech when you need to
clarify something.
Speech venue: Make sure that you prepare a suitable speech venue. This is a
vital consideration for a successful speech. Consider the size of your audience
in selecting the venue, whether a classroom, a lecture theatre, a conference hall,
a stadium or any other setting. Besides, you should prepare supporting tools and
equipment, such as microphones, projectors, audio devices and other necessary
items for an effective presentation. Generally, the venue must offer a conducive
environment for your audience to concentrate on your speech.
