Principles guiding the formatting of radio plays
A radio drama script has a distinctive format which helps scriptwriters to convey
how sound and music can be used in the performance. The scriptwriters should
acquaint themselves with the format and adhere to the specific principles of
format. The following are the principles of formatting the script for radio play:
(i) All dialogues are indented left and numbered in each scene.
(ii) All dialogues are usually double spaced.
(iii) Sound and music cues are numbered, written in capital letters and are
bolded.
(iv) Directions for pronunciation, intonation and position of characters before
the microphone are written in capital letters and should be bolded.
(v) Writer should estimate time of the play whereby the formula used is that
one page of dialogue is approximately one minute of broadcast time.
