          FOR ONLINE READING ONLY

                    Introduction

In this chapter, you will learn how to find the area of a rectangle,
square and triangle. The competencies developed will enable
you to apply the concept of area in building constructions,

textile and dressmaking and many other real-life applications.

           The concept of area
The area is the surface region of the shape. The area can be
determined by dividing the shape into smaller, equal squares and

counting them. The area can also be obtained by using a formula
and measurements. The area is measured in metric units such
as square metres (m²), square centimetres (cm²) and square
           millimetres (mm²).

           Area of a rectangle
The area of a rectangle is the entire surface region of the rectangle.

Activity 1 Determining the area of a rectangle

             Steps

                1. Draw a rectangle of any size of your choice.
                2. Divide the width of a rectangle into small strips of 1 cm
                    each.
