metres. Find its area in centimetres.

            10. The length of a rectangular garden is 84 metres. If its width
is 45 metres, find its area.

           Area of a square

The area of a square is the entire surface region of the square.
The area of a square is obtained by multiplying the length by the
width of the square. Recall that all sides of a square have equal

           length.

Thus, Area of a square = length × width or length × length.

                  Example 1

Find the area of the following square.

                                          9 cm

                                                      9 cm

              Solution

                  Length of a side = 9 cm

Area of the square = 9 cm × 9 cm

                                                     2
                                                  = 81 cm .
                                                                   2
Therefore, the area of the square is 81 cm .
