In Activity 2 you have learnt that the area of a triangle is obtained
by counting small squares. That is the area of a triangle is obtained
by taking half of the area of the square or rectangle.
                                                          1
Therefore, the area of a triangle = × × height base.

                     Example 1

Find the area of the triangle PQR.

                               P

                            7 cm

                              Q 10 cm R

                 Solution

                 Base (QR ) = 10 cm

                 Height (QP ) = 7 cm

                                          1
                 Area of a =triangle × × height base
                                          2

                                         1
                                             = × ×10 cm 7cm
                                         2
                                             = 35 cm 2

                                                                           2
Therefore, the area of a triangle PQR is 35 cm .
