                Solution

                Side length = 70 m
The square is drawn as follows.
                             70 m

                                        70 m

Thus, area of a square = length × length.

                                               =70 m × 70 m
                                                          2
                                               = 4900 m .
                                                                    2
Therefore, the area of the field is 4900 m .

                     Exercise 2

                1. Find the area in each of the following shapes:

                    (a) 8 cm (b)

                            8 cm 10 m

                                                                               10 m

                2. The length of one side of a square is 40 centimetres.
Find the area of the square.
