In Activity 1, you have learnt that the area of the rectangle is
obtained by counting small squares in that rectangle. Thus, the
area of the rectangle of your choice is equal to the number of
small squares obtained. Also, the area of a rectangle is obtained
by counting numbers of small squares in the length side and width
side. If the number of small squares in the length side is multiplied
by that of width side, the answer will be the total number of small
squares in the rectangle. Thus, the area of the rectangle is
length × width. That is the area of a rectangle = length × width.
Example 1
Find the area of the following rectangle.
9 cm
5 cm
Solution
Area of a rectangle = length × width
= 9 cm × 5 cm
2
= 45 cm .
Therefore, the area of the rectangle is 45 cm .
