Activity 3: Investigating the development stages of a housefly
Materials: A hand lens, a piece of raw meat, plastic wrap, pins
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
and a plate
Procedure
1. Place the piece of meat on the plate.
2. Place the plate with the meat in an open space where
houseflies can land on it.
3. Use a hand lens to look at the meat on the plate. Check
for any living organisms. What do you see?
4. After 24 hours, observe how the eggs have changed into
larvae.
5. Continue to observe periodically how larvae change into
pupae by answering the following questions:
(a) What kind of shield or casing covers these creatures?
(b) After how many days did these creatures change?
(c) Are these creatures moving?
6. Count ten pupae and leave them on the plate.
7. Cover the plate with a plastic wrap. Make small holes in
the plastic wrap with a pin.
8. Continue observing the pupae and write down your
observations guided by the following questions:
(a) How many pupae are left on the plate?
(b) What happened to the other pupae?
(c) What other organisms can you see on the plate?
