Experiment 3: Investigating transfer of heat in liquids

Aim: To demonstrate transfer of heat in liquids
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Materials: A cooking pot, a stove, a matchstick, water, small
pieces of A4 paper and a thermometer

Caution: Exercise caution throughout the experiment to
avoid fire hazards.

Procedure
1. Take small pieces of paper and put them in the cooking
pot.

2. Add cold water into the cooking pot and leave it for five
minutes as shown in Figure 3(a). What happens to the
small pieces of paper?

3. Measure the temperature of the water using a thermometer
and record it.

4. Place the pot with the pieces of paper in water on the lit
stove as shown in Figure 3(b).

5. Wait for ten minutes, then measure the water temperature
using a thermometer and record it.

6. What happened to the pieces of paper and the water
temperature?

7. Write the results as in Table 1.
