When they came to the threshing floor of Atad beyond Jordan, they lamented greatly
and sorrowfully. Joseph made mourning of his father for 7 days. When the inhabitants
of the land, i.e. the Canaanites saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad they
said, “This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians. Therefore, the place was named
Abel-Mizraim.” Joseph returned to Egypt with all his brothers and all who had gone
up with him to bury his father.

Joseph and his brothers after their father’s death
When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they became afraid; for they
thought that Joseph could revenge. They sent message to him of pardoning them
as it was asked by their father Jacob. Joseph wept when he got the message and he
said to them, “Fear not for am I in the place of God? As for you meant evil but God
meant it for good to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they
were today” (Genesis 50:20).
Joseph lived with his brothers until he saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation.
He also saw Machir’s children. Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. God
will visit you and bring you up to the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob (Genesis 50:24). Joseph made the Israelites swear that when they go out of
the land they should carry his bones. At the age of 110 years, Joseph died. His body
was embalmed and was kept in the coffin in Egypt.
Lessons learnt from Joseph’s history
From the life and history of Joseph, we learn that God is faithful to those who obey
Him. Furthermore, we learn that God is a defender and protector of those who hope
in him. We also learn that sometimes suffering and torture prepare people for higher
positions. Besides, trustworthiness and faithfulness are very important characters in
human life. Finally, we learn that good behaviour begins at home.
Exercise 4.3
1. Present lessons that modern Christians should learn from the life experience of
the biblical Patriarchs.
2. The birth of Ishmael is the result of Abraham’s impatience. With relevant examples
show that impatience affect many youth in the course of their life.
3. Basing on God’s interventions in the life of biblical patriarchs. Provide hope to
families which lost hope because of lack of children.
4. Draw lessons that youth can learn from the life experience of Joseph in Egypt.
5. Discuss the roles of Sarah and Rebekah in Abraham and Isaac’s walk with God
