God?” (Genesis 39:9). Joseph knew the importance of being faithful, such as: To be
exalted by God, to obtain God’s favour, to be in good relationship with God, to conduct
prayers that are heard by God, and, to be protected and stay away from temptations.

          Joseph’s interpretation on prisoners’ dreams
When the story reached Potiphar, he put Joseph into prison. In the prison, there were
two people: the chief butler and the chief baker of Pharaoh. These officers had dreams
and they narrated them to Joseph who interpreted them. (Genesis 40:1-23)

          The butler’s dream
In his dream, he saw a vine before him and on the vine, there were three branches.
As soon as it budded, its blossoms shot forth and the cluster ripened into grapes.
Pharaoh’s cup was in his hand, and he took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s
cup and placed the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.
          Interpretation
The three branches were three days. Within the three days, Pharaoh would restore
him to his office. He would place Pharaoh’s cup in his hand as formerly.

          The chief baker’s dream
He saw three baskets of cake on his head; in the uppermost basket, there were all sorts
of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on his head.

          Interpretation
The three baskets were three days Pharaoh would hang him on a tree and the birds
will eat the flesh from him.

          Both dreams were fulfilled.

          Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dream
Two years later, Pharaoh had the following dreams: He was standing by the river
Nile. He saw seven (7) fat and sleek cows coming out of the river, and they began to
feed on grass. Then, seven other cows, thin and ugly came out, and they stood by the
other cows. The thin and ugly cows ate up the fat cows (Genesis 41:1-4).

Seven ears of corn full and ripe were growing on one stalk. In addition, other seven
ears of thin and scorched by the desert wind sprouted after them. Then, the thin ears
of corn swallowed the full ones. The following morning, Pharaoh commanded all
his magicians and wise men to interpret the dreams, but they failed.
