Measures to reduce the victims of rape cases
Rape is not a selective crime; it may happen on streets, in cars, in schools, in parks,
or even on alleys. The rapist does not regard the victim’s age, race or social status.
The following measures may be taken by a victim to avoid being raped. First, one
may avoid risk situations like walking alone; excessive consumption of drugs and
alcohol, and avoid relationships with irresponsible men. Second, one is advised to

be alert to the surroundings and the people around, and avoid staying in dark or
suspicious areas. Third, the other attempt for one to avoid rape cases is to dress
properly and avoid exposing one’s body to strangers. Fourth, avoiding night casual
walks is recommended for one to be safe from rape incidences. Finally, awareness
of the dangers of accepting rides from unfamiliar people is among the best means
            for protection against rape cases.

            Activity 4.9

Use library and internet sources, and read Genesis 33, then, explain practical measures
to be taken to avoid rape cases in your society.

The blessing of Jacob at Bethel
God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and settle there. Make an altar to God

who had appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau” (Genesis 35:1). As
he came at Luz (Bethel) which is in the land of Canaan, he built an altar and called it
El-bethel (meaning God of Bethel) because God had revealed himself to him there,
when he was fleeing from his brother.

Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under an oak below Bethel. Therefore,
the name of the oak was called Allon-bacuth, meaning oak of weeping (Genesis 35:8).
God appeared again to Jacob when he came from Paddan-aram and He blessed him.
God changed Jacob’s name to Israel. He blessed him to be fruitful and get multiplied.

Jacob’s journey from Shechem to Bethel was like a pilgrimage to the sacred places,
where he had previously experienced God’s presence and special favour. It was at
Bethel that he had seen the vision of the ladder and received the promises from God.
He had to fulfill the vow he had made of building an altar there, and renew his loyalty

to God by getting rid of idols from his household.
