surprised Isaac, voice and hands. Finally, Jacob was blessed by Isaac. When Esau
came, he found already Jacob had taken his blessings so he promised to kill him
when Isaac dies.
Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life because of the Hittite women (wives
of Esau). If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women of the land what good will my

life be to me?” (Genesis 27:46).
God’s providence and protection to Jacob
Isaac called Jacob, blessed him, and told him that he shall not marry one of the Canaanite
women. He told him to arise and go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel, to his
mother’s father and take a wife from one of the daughters of Laban, his mother’s
brother. God would bless and make him fruitful and multiply. When Esau saw that his
wives did not please his parents, he went to Ishmael and took Mahalath the daughter
of Ishmael as his wife. Figure 4.9 depicts Isaac blessing Jacob.

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He reached at a certain place and
stayed there because it was night and the sun had set. He took one of the stones, put
under his head as a pillow, and slept. He dreamed that there was a ladder reaching to
heaven and behold the angels of God were descending and ascending, and the Lord
stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God
of Isaac” (Genesis 28:13).
The Lord promised him that He would give him many descendants. God would protect
and bless him. Then, Jacob awoke from the sleep and said “surely the Lord is in this
