God blessed Isaac, and he became very rich by possessing flocks, herds, and great
household. The Philistines and the natives of Gerar, were jealous of Isaac. They filled
with earth the wells of Isaac which has been dug by his father’s servants. Also, king
Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us for you are much mightier than we.”
Isaac left and went to dwell at the valley of Gerar. He dug again the wells which the
Philistines had stopped.

When Isaac’s servants dug the well which had springs of water, the herdsmen of
Gerar quarreled with the herdsmen of Isaac saying that the water was theirs. Isaac
called the well Esek because they had contended with him. Isaac dug another well
and they quarreled again over it, he called it Sitnah. He dug another well and they
did not quarrel. He called it Rehoboth saying God had made water for us, and we
shall be fruitful in the land.
From the valley of Gerar, Isaac went to Beersheba. God appeared to him and told
him that he was the God of Abraham. He should not fear for He will bless him and
multiply his descendants. Isaac built an altar there.
One day Abimelech went to see him with his advisor, Ahuzzath and his commander
of the army Phicol. They made a covenant between them of not making any harm to
them. The servants of Isaac told him that they had found water from the well they dug.
Isaac called the well Shibah. Therefore, the name of the city is Beer-Sheba to this day.
Jacob’s cunning activity on blessing
At the age of 40 years, Esau married two wives: Judith the daughter of Be-eri, the
Hittite and Basemath the daughter of Elon, the Hittite.
These wives made the life of Isaac and Rebekah bitter. Then, Rebekah said to Isaac
that she was weary of her life because of the Hittite women.
When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim, he called Esau and asked him to take
his weapons, and go to the field and hunt game and prepare savory food; such as the
one he loves so as he may eat, and then bless him. When Rebekah heard it, he asked
Jacob to go to the flock and fetch two kids so as he may make savory food for Isaac
and receive blessing. But Jacob said, “Behold Esau is hairy man and I am smooth
man, perhaps my father will feel me and I shall seem to be mocking him and bring
curse upon myself and not a blessing” (Genesis 27:11-12).
Rebekah said, “Upon me be your curse my son only obey my words.” Jacob did as
he was commanded by his mother. Rebekah made Jacob wear the garments of Esau,
and the skin of the kids on his hands and the smooth parts of his neck. Two things
