much for he was in need of blessing, and he told the one who wrestled with him that
he would not let him go unless he blessed him. Finally, Jacob was blessed, and he
was given a new name “Israel” which means “the one who contended with God.”

The one who wrestled with Jacob was an Angel of the Lord. Jacob represents the
father of all God’s people. Jacob called the place “Peniel” which means “he saw

God face-to-face and still his life was spared.” Up to this day, the Israelites do not
eat the sinew of the hip which is upon the hollow of the thigh because God touched
the hollow of Jacob’s thigh.

Jacob meets his brother Esau
In this event, Jacob and Esau are finally reconciled. Jacob preferred to part from his
brother Esau: Thus, the two clans are formed and eventually these would become
two distinct peoples, the Edomites and the Israelites.

The rape of Dinah

Jacob travelled safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan on his
way from Paddan-aram. He camped before the city. And from the sons of Hamor,
Shechem’s father, Jacob bought a piece of land and built an altar, and named it El-
Elohe-Israel which means “El the God of Israel.” In Genesis 34, Dinah the daughter
of Leah went to visit the women of the land. Shechem, the son of Hamor, raped her.
Her brothers revenged for that evil action done to their sister. Figure 4.12 depicts
Dinah after she was raped by Shekem.
