The birth of Benjamin and death of Rachel
Jacob and the people who accompanied him journeyed from Bethel; when they were
still at some distance from Ephrath, Rachel was in childbirth. Rachel gave birth to

a son. She died in her labour pain. As her soul was departing, she called him Ben-
oni meaning, “son of my sorrow.” But his father, Jacob, called him Benjamin which

means “son of the right hand.” Rachel was buried on the way to Ephrath, now known
as Bethlehem and Jacob set up a pillar at her tomb; it is the pillar of Rachel’s tomb,

which is there to this day.

          The death of Isaac
Israel (Jacob) journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder. While
Israel lived in that land, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine,

          and Israel heard of it.

Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre or Kiriath-arba that is Hebron, where Abraham
and Isaac had journeyed. Isaac died at the age of 180 years, and he was buried by Esau
and Jacob at the land of Machpelah.

The life history of Joseph: faithfulness and God’s providence
Jacob settled in the land which his father had lived as an alien, the land of Canaan.
At the age of 17 years Joseph joined his half-brothers in taking care of the flock.
Joseph used to inform his father about the bad habits of his siblings. Usually, Joseph

remained at home while his brothers looked after the flock. Being a son of his old
age, Jacob loved Joseph more than his half-brothers. Jacob made for him a beautiful
          coat of many colours.

          Joseph’s dreams

Joseph had two dreams which were foretelling his future life and greatness. The first
dream: Joseph and his brothers were binding sheaves in a field. His sheaf arose and
stood upright. His brothers’ sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to his sheaf.

This meant that Joseph would rule over his brothers. Figure 4.13 is a portrayal of
what was like the first dream of Joseph.
