sons and all his daughters sought to comfort him. However, he refused to be comforted
because he thought that his beloved son Joseph had been eaten by wild beasts. He
entered in deep sorrow when he heard the sad news of his beloved son, Joseph.
Joseph in Egypt
Joseph was taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain in the

Pharaoh’s army, and an Egyptian, bought him from the Ishmaelites. The Lord was
with Joseph, and he became a successful man; he was in the house of the Egyptian
master. God blessed both Joseph and Potiphar’s house. As a result, Potiphar made
Joseph in charge of his household.
Potiphar’s wife persuaded Joseph to sleep with her on several occasions while people
were away, but he refused. Joseph said to Potiphar’s wife, “How then could I do
great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9). Then, one day she grabbed
Joseph and tried to force him to sleep with her. Joseph fled leaving his garments with
her. Then, she called people claiming that Joseph wanted to rape her, but when she
cried, he escaped and left his clothes behind. Joseph’s fidelity to God and to his master
brought about his imprisonment. God is always with people like Joseph and He never
forsakes them. Figure 4.16 portrays Joseph running away from temptation.

Reasons for overcoming temptations
There were three main reasons that led Joseph to overcome temptations from the
Potiphar’s wife. The reasons are based on the fact that Joseph trusted in God’s power,
he lived a good moral life, and indeed, he was a God-fearing man. When tested by
Potiphar’s wife, Joseph said, “… how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against
