From Beer-sheba, the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and
their wives in the wagons. They also took their cattle and the goods, and reached
Egypt. All the people belonging to Jacob who went to Egypt were his own offspring,
not including the wives of Jacob’s sons, who all of them were 66 people. Therefore,
the total number of the house of Jacob that came into Egypt was seventy.

In Egypt Jacob lived in Goshen, the best part of the land in Egypt. This land was given
by Pharaoh to Joseph’s father Jacob and all his descendants who migrated to Egypt.
Goshen is very close to the city of Rameses. Jacob lived in Egypt for 17 years. A total
of Jacob’s earthly life was 147 years.
The last days of Jacob
When Joseph heard that his father was ill, he brought his two sons to him, i.e. Ephraim
and Manasseh. When Jacob saw them, he told Joseph what God had told him at Luz
of giving the land, so he said Ephraim and Manasseh are mine just like Reuben and
Simeon. He told Joseph on how Rachel died in Canaan on the way to Ephrath that
is Bethlehem.
Then, he kissed the sons of Joseph and embraced them. He put his right hand on
Ephraim, who was young, and his left hand on Manasseh. Then, he blessed them.
Joseph stopped him, but he refused to stop with his blessings. He said that Ephraim
shall be great and his descendants shall be a multitude of nations. Jacob gave Joseph
one portion more than his brothers.
Jacob’s farewell message to his sons
Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather yourselves together that I may tell what shall
befall you in days to come.” He narrated to them all what could happen to each one
of them, starting with Reuben and ending with Benjamin. Jacob implored his sons to
bury him at Machpelah, for it was the place where his ancestors were buried.
Machpelah was a piece of land on the east of Mamre in Canaan. It was bought
by Abraham from Ephron the Hittite. It was the burial place of Abraham and his
descendants. The following people were buried there: Sarah, Abraham, Isaac, Rebekah,
Leah and Jacob. After speaking to them, Jacob died and was gathered to his people.
He was 147 years when he died.
Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm him for forty (40) days.
All Egyptians wept for 70 days. After the days of weeping were over, Joseph asked
Pharaoh to let him go and bury his father as he had been instructed.
Pharaoh allowed him and Joseph was accompanied by the following people: All the
servants of Pharaoh; all the elders of Egypt; all the household of Joseph; all Joseph’s
brothers; all his father’s household chariots and horse men. It was a very great company.
