Sarah’s death
FOR ONLINE READING ONLY
Sarah lived for one hundred and twenty-seven (127) years. She died at Kiriath-arba
(Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham bought a piece of land of Machpelah,
facing Mamre (Hebron) in the land of Canaan. He purchased it from Ephron the son
of Zohar, the Hittite, at the price of 400 shekels of silver and buried Sarah. The
field and the cave that is in it passed from the Hittites into Abraham’s possession as a
burial place. It is called the Machpelah cave.
The Marriage of Isaac
Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. He said to his servant Eliezer, “Put
your hand under my thigh and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven
and of the earth that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I dwell, but will go to my country and to my kindred and
take a wife for my son Isaac” (Genesis 24:1-4).
Eliezer the servant of Abraham went and met with Rebekah the daughter of Bethuel,
the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother. Eliezer chose her to be
the wife of Isaac. Now, Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in
the land of Negeb. He went out in the evening to walk in the field; and looking up
he saw Rebekah, and Rebekah saw Isaac. She alighted from the camel and said to
the servant, “Who is the man walking in the field to meet us? (Genesis 24:65). The
servant said, “It is my master.” So, she took her veil and covered herself. And the
servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then, Isaac brought her into
his mother’s tent. From that day, Rebekah became Isaac’s wife, and he loved her.
Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.
Last days of Abraham
After the death of Sarah, Abraham took another wife whose name was Keturah. She
bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishback and Shuah. All six children
became the fathers of other Arabian tribes. Ishmael’s descendants are the North
Arabian tribes. The purpose of this lineage is to show that all races are related by their
common origin and destiny. Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Deban.
At 175 years old, Abraham died and was buried by Isaac and Ishmael at the cave of
Machpelah in the field of Ephron, East of Mamre. Abraham was buried at the same
