your way.” They said, “No, we will spend the night in the street” (Genesis 19:1-2).
But later they entered in Lot’s house. Then, at night, the people of Sodom both young
and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house, called Lot asking him
to let the angels go out so that they may know them. However, Lot promised to give
them his two daughters who were virgins instead of the angels to sleep with them,

            but they disagreed.

The two visitors came out from the house, and brought Lot into the house and shut
the door. And they blinded the people who wanted to harm them. Next day, the angels
commanded Lot and his family to leave Sodom because God was going to destroy
it. Then, the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur (brimstone) and fire from
heaven and destroyed the cities, the valley, and the inhabitants. As they were running,
Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Lot ran and hid in a small city,
            called Zoar.

Sodom and Gomorrah were punished because of their many sins. According to
Genesis19:5, their greatest sin was homosexuality (hence the term “sodomy”). The
story warns that evil always leads to death, but goodness leads to reward. Lot showed
his hospitality and protected the visitors. The disobedience of Lot’s wife made her to
            become the pillar of salt.

The sin of Sodom and Gomorrah in today’s context
Homosexuality is a situation in which people of the same sex engage in sex and
sexual affairs. The practice of homosexuality is an abomination and sin against God

that is why the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed with fire and sulfur.
Like Sodom and Gomorrah, the contemporary world is struggling with the cases of
homosexuality and serious efforts are needed to curb this problem.

               Exercise 4:1
