Figure 4.2: Abraham entering in a covenant with God
Covenant confirmation (Genesis 15: 17-21)
The Lord confirmed His covenant with a visual sign - a smoking firepot and a
flaming torch passing between the carcasses. He affirms His promise to give Abram’s
descendants a vast stretch of land, populated by diverse tribes.
The natives in the Promised Land (Canaan)
The Bible considers the Canaanites and groups associated with them, the Amorites,
Hittites, Jebusites, Hivites, Perizzites, and Girgashites as the pre-Israelite inhabitants
of the land of Canaan. According to tradition, these early inhabitants of the land are
referred to as the seven nations of Canaan. The Promised Land was put under the
Israelites following the conquest led by Joshua and the conquest that was completed
during the period of Judges. Canaan refers to the land that was situated in the territory
of the southern Levant. In today’s understanding, Canaan encompasses the land of
Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, and the southern parts of Syria and Lebanon.
Activity 4.2
Read the book of Genesis, and explain the inhabitants of the Promised Land before
it was conquered by Israelites.
