The reasons for Abraham’s call (Genesis 12)
Abraham was seventy-five (75) years old when he departed from Haran to Canaan.
He went with Sarai and his brother’s son, Lot, and all their possessions at Haran. In
Canaan, Abraham went up to Shechem to the Oak of Moreh. At that time, the Canaanites
were living in the land of Canaan. The Lord appeared to Abraham at Shechem and
promised to give him that land to his descendants. Therefore, he built the first altar to
the Lord at Shechem and worshiped Him. From there, he moved to the hill country
of Bethel on the west and Ai on the east, pitched a tent, built the second altar there,
and called upon the name of the Lord. From Bethel, he went to Negeb.
Activity 4.1
Read Genesis 12, and do the following:
1. Explain the reasons for Abraham’s call by God.
2. State the promises made by God to Abraham.
3. Describe the covenant made between God and Abraham.
Abram and Sarai in Egypt
Now, there was famine in the land of Canaan. Therefore, Abraham went down to
Egypt as an alien because the famine was severe in the land. Before entering Egypt,
he said to Sarai, his wife, “I know that you are a woman, beautiful to behold, when
the Egyptians see you, they will say, “This is his wife; then they will kill me but
they will let you live.” Therefore, entering Egypt, Abraham told Sarai to say to the
Egyptians that she was his sister so that he may save his life. When Abraham entered
