Importance of unity for sustainable development
The story of the tower of Babel teaches us many things, including the significance
of unity with God and other members of the community for promoting sustainable
development. The people of Babel failed to achieve their goal because they stood
outside God’s circle. Hence to achieve a goal be it social or economic we have to work
according to the wishes of God and be in union with Him. This element is essential

for development. Union with God accomplishes any task, develops positive attitude
towards work, and activates awareness of our accountability and responsibility.
Likewise, unity enables people in groups to perform their tasks more effectively and
collectively. It also encourages co-operation and positive relationships. Besides, it
empowers individuals to gain more knowledge and skills from other people. Figure
3.15 portrays a symbol of unity.

The role of communication in sustainable development
Communication is a-two-way process that involves transferring of information
from one person or group to another. It can be face to face, through the use of
communication devices or in writing. Nowdays mass media are common means
through which information is sent. Mass media are means of mass communication
such as broadcasting, publishing and the internet. Through the use of these means
information is sent to many people at a time.

For sustainable development communication is very essential, since it caters for
information exchange, establishes consensus among people with divergent opinions
and interests, and it facilitates the building of technical know-how. Furthermore, it is
instrumental for promoting decision making and action capacities between government,
