The Tower of Babel
The tower of Babel in biblical literature was a structure built in the land of
Shinar (Babylonia) sometimes after the flood. The story of its construction, given
in Genesis 11:1-9, appears to be an attempt to explain the existence of diverse human
languages. According to Genesis, the Babylonians wanted to make a name for
themselves by building a mighty city and a tower with its top in the heavens. God
disrupted the work by confusing the language of the workers that they could no
longer understand one another. The city was never completed, and the people were
dispersed over the face of the earth. Therefore, it was called Babel, because there the
Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them
abroad over the face of all the earth.” In this view, Babel means confusion. Figure
3.14 gives a portrayal of the Tower of Babel.

Lessons we learn from the Tower of Babel
The story of the tower of Babel has many things to teach the current generation. The
story of building the tower of Babel symbolises man’s pride and rebellion against
God. It teaches that it is God who accomplishes things in us, not our human efforts.
Mankind is God’s creation, therefore he cannot compete with Him.
