           Introduction

The second part of the Book of Genesis tells you the story of the formation of
important biblical figures, called the Patriarchs. These are the male heads of
the family or larger groups of people. The Israelites traced their ancestry to
one man-the patriarch Abraham (Isaiah 51:2; Hebrews 7:4). They maintained
this patriarchal tradition based on the covenant God made with their first three
patriarchs-Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In this chapter, you will learn about the
lives of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their relationship with God. These three
biblical figures have built a great faith and teaching in Christian faith. You will
also learn the reasons for their call and covenant made with God. God prepared
the chosen nation of Israel from this foundation. The competencies developed will
help you to obey and trust God in your life.

          The Call of Abram (Abraham)
The call of Abraham in Genesis 11:27-12:20 and its implication on the Christian
faith is fundamental to the study of Bible Knowledge. We are made aware by the
scripture that, Yahweh in His grace called Abraham from Ur of the Chaldeans and
made a promise to Abraham who responded to the call in faith and went to the land
of Canaan. And God later appeared to him in Canaan and promised to give his
descendants the land of Canaan. Through God’s promises to Abraham mankind is
saved through Jesus, the Messiah who came from Abraham’s descendants. The call
of Abraham is a central theme as the Jewish scripture, the Christian Bible, and the
gospel are all built upon that intergenerational event. The study recommends that
the service to God has to be pursued as a team work because even Abraham did not
respond to God’s call alone but together with his family and his entire household.
