Spelling rules
The spelling rules for the finals start with i and u.
When finals begin with i or u without an initial, i should be written as y and u be
written as w. For example ie-ye, uo-wo; or y and w should be added before i
and u respectively. For example, i-yi, u-wu.
Final beginning with ü without an initial before it is written as yu. For example:
hànyǔ(Chinese),yuànzi(courtyyard),yún(cloud).
如:jùzi(句子),qù(去),xūyào(需要)
A final beginning with ü follows an initial j or q or x, ü is written as u,but
the pronunciation is still ü. For example: jùzi(sentence),qù(go)
,xūyào(need).
(回)dūn(吨)。
When iou, uei, uen follow an initial, they are changed respectively into iu,ui,un.
For example: niú(cow),huí(come back), dūn(ton)。
Retroflexion with -r
-r is often added to another final to make it retroflexed. The retroflex final is
transcribed by adding r to the original final, for example: wánr, huār.
